Bill Sydney Porter (September 11, 1862 – June 5, 1910), known by his pen name O. Henry, was an American writer. O. Henry's short stories are known for their wit, wordplay, warm characterization and clever twist endings.

Early existence

William Sidney Porter was created on Sept. 2010 11, 1862, in Greensboro, New york. He improved the transliteration of his middle brand to Sydney in 1898. His father and mother were Doctor Algernon Sidney Porter (1825–88), a physician, and Mary Her Virginia Swaim Porter (1833–65). They were hitched on April 20, 1858. When William was 3, his mother died from tuberculosis, and this individual and his father moved into the property of his paternal grandmother. As a child, Avoir was usually read his favorite performs were Lane's translation of One Thousands of and One Nights, and Burton's Anatomy of Melancholy.[2] Porter graduated from his aunt Evelina Maria Porter's elementary school in 1876. Avoir traveled with Dr . James K. Lounge to Texas in Mar 1882, wishing that a alter of air flow would help alleviate a persistent cough he had produced. He joined up with the " Hill City Quartet, " a group of young men who have sang for gatherings and serenaded fresh women with the town. Tenir met and began courting Athol Estes, then seventeen years old and from a wealthy family. Her mom objected for the match since Athol was ill, enduring from tuberculosis. About July one particular, 1887, Porter eloped with Athol for the home of Reverend L. K. Smoot, where these were married The couple continuing to take part in musical and theater groups, and Athol encouraged her husband to pursue his writing. A similar year, Porter began working at the Initially National Traditional bank of Austin texas as a teller and bookkeeper at the same earnings he had produced at the GLO. The bank was operated privately, in private and Tenir was apparently careless in keeping his books and may even have embezzled funds.
